Buffering, stuttering or freezing

In order of likelihood: the decoder, the network, the provider — then the stream itself

Anees TV is an IPTV player and ships with no channels or media of its own: it neither chooses your bitrate nor hosts your stream. So this page works outwards — the device, then your line, then the server at the other end — in the order they actually go wrong.

They are two different faults

• Buffering — the picture stops, a spinner appears, then it carries on. Bytes are not arriving fast enough: network or provider.
• Stuttering — it never stops, it just moves in jerks. Bytes are arriving; the device cannot turn them into pictures fast enough: decoding.

Look at Stream info first

During playback, open the controls and press the ⓘ button. Three rows of the Stream info panel settle the argument:

• Resolution — what you are actually being handed, e.g. 3840 × 2160. If a cheap box is being sent 4K, stop there.
• Decoding — software means the CPU is doing the video chip's job. On a TV box that word explains the stutter.
• Buffering — yes while it is stalled points at the network, not the decoder.

The Codec and Decoding rows only appear on the players that can report them, so a missing row is not a fault.

1 — The device cannot decode this stream

The commonest cause by a wide margin. A Fire TV Stick is a small, low-memory box: in the worst case it hands the app a 960×540 surface with very little headroom, and a 4K HEVC stream is more than it can chew.

1. Play a smaller copy of the same channel. Providers almost always list a channel more than once — FHD, HD, SD — as separate entries in your list, not as a quality menu inside one channel. The 1080p row often plays perfectly where the 4K row will not.
2. Switch player. The playback controls carry a Switch player pill offering Fast, High quality and Compatible. One press hands the stream to another engine at the same position, remembered for that title on that device. Compatible is the one to try.
3. Then the decoding setting, under Settings → Playback & downloads → Video decoding:
   • Auto (recommended) already picks direct hardware decoding on Android TV. Leave it unless you have a reason.
   • Hardware — fast forces that direct path. This is the one for stutter.
   • Hardware — compatible is an older path that copies every frame out of the video chip into memory. It is there for the rare device that shows a black picture on the fast path — not a cure for jerkiness, and on a weak box it can cause it.
   • Software is CPU decoding: the slowest, a last resort.

2 — The network into the room

A live 4K stream is a sustained load, not a download that can catch up later. In order of effect: Ethernet if there is a socket; otherwise the 5 GHz band rather than 2.4; and remember that a stick behind a large metal television sits inside a small radio shield.

3 — The provider, at prime time

Panels oversell capacity and 21:00 is when that shows. Play a different channel from the same provider: if every channel of theirs stalls while nothing else on your connection does, and the same ones are flawless at 02:00, you have found it. No app fixes someone else's bandwidth.

4 — Try the other live format

Settings → Playback & downloads → Live stream format offers MPEG-TS (default) and HLS (m3u8); HLS is generally kinder to a weak connection. A failing channel retries the other format on its own, but forcing it is worth a try when a whole group misbehaves.

5 — A connection limit, after fast switching

Most subscriptions allow one or two simultaneous connections, and hopping players quickly can leave the old session counted for a minute. The app says so: "Still refusing - switching players quickly can trip your provider connection limit. Wait a minute, then retry." Wait the minute, then check nobody else is watching on your login.

VPN, and the test that ends the argument

A VPN is the fix when your network blocks the host, and the cause when it routes you through a distant, busy exit — try it both ways. Then open the same stream in VLC on a computer on the same connection: if it stutters there too, the provider is at fault, and that test saves more evenings than any setting here.

Troubleshooting

Only the 4K channels stutter; everything else is perfect

A decoder ceiling, not a network problem. Play the FHD row of the same channel and set Video decoding to Hardware — fast.

The picture is black, or green, instead of jerky

Different fault, different switch. Try Switch player, then Video decoding → Hardware — compatible, which exists for exactly this.

It plays for ten seconds and then freezes for good

Usually that one stream dying rather than a slow one. Try another channel; if the whole provider has gone quiet, see "couldn't reach the server".
